not going to yoga today…

big mistake… that’s what you’re thinking right?  Well it’s downright frigid for about the 16th day in a row and the animal instincts in me are taking over.  So today, instead of yoga, I’m going to hibernate, even if only for an hour or two.  I’ve lit a fire, I’m dressed as cozy as can be and I’ve got a warm cup of tea by my side.  I’ve put some birdseed out for the hungry birds and even made an offering of day old bread to the dreaded squirrels whom I generally loathe.    I’m going to draw a hot bath, finish my book, cook something naughty for dinner and just hibernate.  Sometimes if we are truly listening to our bodies, it’s o.k. to skip yoga!  Namaste

Strength and Softness

Image

This weekend at Stil Studio during Kevan’s morning class he focused on the idea of strength and softness. I immediately was reminded of a  blog I wrote earlier in the year about these two opposing feelings. Our practice is always a combination of both. It has to be in order to be effective. When we are in a physically challenging pose we need our strength to get into the pose and we need softness in order to remain in the pose.

A member of the Stil Studio community has recently had to test her ability to combine strength and softness. Ali Barton was recently diagnosed with a serious heart condition and was told she needed a heart transplant. Since she is pregnant she had to choose to either abort the baby, or wait another five weeks until the baby can be delivered, and then she will be put back on the heart transplant list. She will need strength and softness to get her through the next few weeks. Although I am sure I have probably been in class with Ali before, I have never actually met her. It is clear though, from the outpouring of support, that she is an amazing person who people love. The studio is holding a benefit class for Ali and has set up a site for people to donate to help offset her medical costs during this time. Please keep Ali and her family in your thoughts and prayers throughout the holiday season.

Tomorrow marks the one year Anniversary of our 12 day yoga challenge and hence the development of what became a fun, hopefully inspiring blog!  Some have asked, are we going to do it again?  At first, we thought no.  It’s not necessary.  My yoga practice has changed so much in the past year, as has Ali’s, and  it is now a part of our daily lives and not merely a form of exercise.  Yoga, when practiced regularly is so much more, and that is exactly why we will be digging in again tomorrow for another 12 days!  Please feel free to join us and send us any feedback we’d love to hear how you’re doing!

Happy People, Flexible People, Happy, Funny, Flexible People

Two things I want to share today. First, an awesome article that outlines some of the habits of “happy people”

Second, an extremely funny parody on the recently well known Volvo commercial. Make sure to watch in order to get the full effect.

Now you probably understand why Kevan’s class is probably one of my favorite times of the week.

Charles Bukowski once said “to do a dull thing with style is preferable to doing a dangerous thing without it”.

Doing laundry can be an art.

Yoga has style.  It’s an art.  It’s expressive.  Do it everywhere.  Anytime.

Live life artfully.

Challenge and Change

The past two weeks Rebecca talked about the importance of change and challenge. When we are in pose and we start to wobble and then fall this is a gift. It allows us to practice and try again. In life we face challenges and failures, and these things allow us to learn. The other day in class Rebecca introduced us to a brand new flow. She complimented us on our ability to follow along versus being in autopilot, which sometimes tends to happen during class. She explained that a new flow, or any type of change for that matter, is good for our brains. Next time you are caught off guard by change in your life don’t get anxious or stressed. Try and think about it in a positive way, and accept the fact that it is actually good for you.
